From Humble Beginnings
- Knot n Co’s journey began when Mo Aisa Barez, who was a respected dentist, fled from Afghanistan to Australia during the civil war of the 1990s. Mo arrived in Australia with a just few key possessions in his suitcase, including an Afghan rug, which was a cherished family heirloom.
- Taking up odd jobs, such as being a pizza delivery driver, Mo took his family rug to a local antique store hoping to sell it for some extra cash to make ends meet. The store owner told him that no-one would be interested but Mo, not to be deterred, struck a deal - if the rug didn’t sell in a week he would come back and pick it up.
- The following day the store owner called saying the rug had already sold, and asked if he had any more rugs they could sell. A new business was born.
- Encouraged by the initial sale, Mo started importing small shipments of rugs from friends and family in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Building a Legacy
- What began as a desperate sale of a family heirloom quickly expanded -Firstly the family's second bedroom filled up with an influx of rugs, eventually filling up an entire garage. Then to entirely to a completely new complex into a warehouse in Granville, Sydney.
- By the 2000s, the business had flourished into a multimillion-dollar wholesale company, recognised across Australia and New Zealand.
Navigating A Global Pandemic
- The global pandemic in 2020 brought unprecedented challenges, significantly impacting the wholesale operations.
- During this difficult time, Sharif, who had been a banker, stepped into the family business full time driven by a sense of duty and the words of his father, who often mentioned it was "always my son's job to take over the throne". However, his father also lovingly referred to the business as "his baby," a testament to his lifelong dedication and passion.
Going Direct To Consumer
- In 2021, the business, which had always been a wholesale business, began selling their authentic, handcrafted rugs direct to consumers. KnotNCo.com was launched offering the highest quality handmade rugs at a fraction of the price of other retailers.
- This move not only helped stabilise the business during the fluctuating times of COVID-19 but also marked a significant shift in how the family connected with their customers.
The Legacy Continues
- By 2023, the transition to an online marketplace was complete, with KnotNCo becoming a primary platform for their exquisite, handcrafted rugs.
- Continuing a legacy of quality, resilience, and cultural richness that had started with a single rug and a journey to a new life.
- This family's story, from humble beginnings to global reach, is a poignant reminder of the endurance of heritage and the transformative power of dedication and adaptability.
