The History of Nain Rugs

The style and design of Nain rugs have become more prominent towards the early 20th century. The area of Nain in central Iran was known for producing woolen cloth as wearable garments however with the decline of the cloth business just before World World War II; the traditions of clothing changed with the influence of culture from the west leading to the evolution and the weaving of Nain styled designs as handmade carpets and rugs.

How Are Nain Rugs Made?

Nain rugs are crafted using high quality materials, with blends of silk, fine wool that are weaved onto a cotton backing.

Highly skilled artisans use a specific asymmetrical Persian knot pattern to achieve these details. The knot densities supersede over one million knots per square metre, to create highly intricate detailing.

The pile of the carpet and rugs are clipped down to a short pile height, to highlight the unique and detailed patterns.

Natural dyes are utilised to create contrast and vibrant patterns, often using natural plants and pigments gathered from the Earth.

What Do Nain Rugs Symbolise?

Nain rugs have deeply rooted symbols beyond their decorative elements, including:

Floral motifs and patterns:
Reflect the beauty of nature, and the growth of the natural world.

Geometric shapes:
Representing harmony and the balance between different shapes like central circular motifs and smaller duplicated shapes like leaf shaped patterns.

Islimi (Curvilinear):
Known for their free flowing curved lines, incorporate floral vegetal motifs and are common within arabesque styled art, expressing the connection between nature and spirituality.

Shah Abbas patterns:
Quite common on Persian rugs, arranged in symmetrical floral patterns that are complex, with more leaves, natural patterns and layers. Symbolising purity, harmony and beauty.
