    Handmade Rugs

Handmade rugs are a great choice if you value uniqueness, craftsmanship, and sustainability. They can add a touch of luxury and personality to your space. While they can be more expensive, their durability and timeless appeal can make them a worthwhile investment.

    Sumak Rugs

Sumak rugs, similar to kilims, feature a thicker weave that creates a smoother front. However, unlike kilims, which are reversible with a smooth front and back, sumak rugs have a ragged back due to a different flat-weaving technique. This technique makes sumak rugs more durable than kilims. The tighter weave also gives Sumak rugs an embroidery-like texture, with intricate geometric and herringbone patterns formed by weaving layers at different angles. Sumak rugs come in a variety of colors, ranging from rich reds, greens, and blues to many shades of cream and beige.

    Origins of Sumak rugs

Historically, sumak rugs have been woven in several regions, including Turkey, the border areas between Iran and Afghanistan, and the Caucasus. These rugs are traditionally crafted by the Baloch, Shahsavan, and Kurdish tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, and the surrounding regions. As tribal rugs, sumak pieces are often smaller in size and were originally used for practical purposes such as bedding, saddle bags, floor coverings, tent coverings, and prayer mats. The name 'sumak' is believed to be derived either from the historic trading town of Shemakja in Azerbaijan or from the Arabic word 'summaq,' meaning 'red,' as many sumak rugs feature rich red tones. At Knot n Co, our team handpicks sumak rugs from the border regions of Afghanistan and Iran, woven by the Baloch people. These high-quality rugs are characterized by beautiful beige tones with colorful accents, making them a unique addition to any home.

    About Persian Rugs

Known for their beauty and amazing quality, hand-woven Persian rugs have long been revered by antiquities experts and amateur enthusiasts alike.

The story of these carpets can be traced back to the ancient kingdom of Persia, now known as Iran. According to the Iran Chamber Society, a non-partisan and non-profit organization aiming to promote Iranian culture and history, Cyrus the Great probably introduced the art of carpet making in Persia after he conquered Babylon in 539 B.C. For more than 2,500 years, these rugs – and the people who make them – have continued to be an invaluable asset to the Iranian culture and society.

Persian rugs are highly regarded for their quality and durability. With the right attention and care, they’ll be enjoyed for generations to come.
